In order to win the long-term mission of green transformation towards carbon neutral energy, Nord teamed up with energy company Gemasolar Solar Thermal Power Plant in Spain to drive the development and utilization of energy through technology and assist in green transformation.
Nord gearbox empowers the energy industry
The total rated power of the Gemasolar solar power plant is 19 MW, with an estimated net power generation of 110 GWh per year, which is sufficient to supply approximately 30000 households and can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 40000 tons per year. Nord has prepared a pair of drivers for each of 2650 heliostats, totaling 5300 NORDBloc. 1 reduction motors. These reduction motors can operate reliably under harsh conditions and continuously and accurately adjust each heliostat to closely track the sun's path.
The Nord gearbox can withstand a variety of environmental conditions
The Gemasolar power plant in southern Spain belongs to this type of power plant: a massive array of heliostat devices is distributed over an area of 185 hectares, focusing sunlight on the absorber area at the top of the central tower.
A special liquid passes through the tower top absorber and collects the focused heat energy, also known as "Concentrated Solar Energy (CSP)". Subsequently, the heating medium flows through the heat exchanger and is cooled again in the heat exchanger. The generated water vapor drives the steam turbine, causing the generator to emit electrical energy. The system can also transfer some water vapor to the water tank and store it for power generation after sunset.
Light is everywhere
The heliostat is designed to rotate and tilt to ensure that from dawn to dusk, as long as the sun remains within the reflection range of the heliostat, the sunlight can be reflected as much as possible to the designated area on the tower. Obviously, each heliostat must be repeatedly adjusted within a day, because only when the heliostat is in a relatively ideal position can it capture significant light and thermal power.
Durable and sturdy
Given the size, weight, and shape of these heliostat devices, each heliostat needs to provide a powerful, robust, and stable driving solution to ensure effective tracking of the sun. In addition, all equipment used here must also be able to withstand very high ambient temperatures. In addition, each heliostat has a mirror area of approximately 120 square meters, making it susceptible to strong winds and storms. This phenomenon inevitably occurs from time to time in this area.
Powerful, robust, and stable driving solutions
The heliostat located in the Gemsolar factory is equipped with Nord's NORDBLOC.1 series Type 5 heavy-duty reduction motor. Each heliostat device has two identical reduction motors, which enable the heliostat to move along two axes and accurately track the path of the sun.
NORDBloc. 1 gearbox not only eliminates the need for additional holes for assembly, but also provides many other features and advantages in more demanding applications, such as:
Larger bearing size;
Interlaced bearing topology;
Higher lateral force tolerance;
Higher axial force tolerance;
Long bearing life.
Durable, lightweight, and flexible
The aluminum casing of the reduction motor does not require painting, as these casings can provide strong and natural anti-corrosion protection. These models are based on FEM optimized design, which is much lighter than early gears, but also more robust. Experiments have shown that they can operate reliably under adverse conditions such as high ambient temperatures.
Even if the requirements are more stringent, such as when working in areas with explosion risks, we can still provide all types of ATEX versions according to the requirements. Users can choose between an economical and efficient direct motor installation solution, as well as a compact, space saving, and lightweight IEC adapter. Ensure that all installation positions are well ventilated before installation.
